In today's digital world, most people are smart and self-sufficient because of the availability of multiple online platforms that facilitate key essential services like online banking, bill payment, tax filing, etc. with a single click. Whether it's Aadhar, a bank account, or getting confirmation of a transaction, the common thing in all of them is your mobile number. Considering there are lots of online OTP and link-based frauds happening, one needs to be 100% sure about mobile linking with government IDs. Wrongly linking mobile numbers on IDs may lead to financial fraud and crime, with financial and reputational losses.
Based on the above chart analysis done for Delhi Metro City, it is very clear that the first four categories of card fraud, which are 21% debit and credit card fraud cases, 16% e-wallet frauds, 13% fraud calls, and 7.4% internet banking-related frauds, happen because in most of the cases either an OTP is compromised that was received on the registered mobile number or people receive a fraud payment link over the registered mobile number that is directly linked to IDs like Aadhar or PANCARD and the same is linked to bank accounts. Hence, it is very clear that people should have complete knowledge of the platforms where mobile numbers are linked, and they should also remove mobile numbers from government IDs that are not known or unfamiliar.
The good news is that now the Department of Telecommunication (GOI Initiative) has developed a web portal by the name of TAFCOP (The Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection), from which people can validate mobile number linkages on IDs and immediately delete or remove unwanted mobile number linkages from IDs. It is a very simple and straight-forward thing. For example, if an Aadhar is linked with the wrong mobile number, then OTP authentication will be received by fraudulent people or hackers. To save your financial transactions, it is very important to unlink wrong mobile numbers from IDs.
Steps to validate mobile number linking on IDs
Step1: Login to TAFCOP web-portal by clicking on
https://tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in/index.php
Step2: Enter your mobile number in the space provided and click on the Request OTP option to generate an OTP for login. Once the OTP is filled, which was received on a mobile number, either click on the Validate option or Resend OTP if anyone wants to re-generate the same.
Step3: Post-validation, people will be able to see multiple mobile numbers (if any) linked to IDs. There is an option to opt for "this is not my number" , "not required" or "required". If anyone wants to remove the unwanted mobile number, just click on either the "this is not my number" or "not required" category and then click on the report option from the below screen of the web portal. Don't forget to mention your name under the field "Name of user".
